Inca Trail & Matchu Picchu Permits - How Do They Work?
Access to the Inca Trail and Machu Picchu is strictly limited by the Peruvian government, booking is required through a licensed tour operator like Alpaca Expeditions. You cannot purchase an Inca Trail permit on your own.
For the Classic 4-Day Trail: Out of the 500 total daily permits, only about 200 are available for tourists. This makes them very competitive and they can sell out months in advance, especially during the dry season (May to October).
For the Short 2-Day Trail: An additional 250 permits are issued daily for the Short Inca Trail (starting at KM 104).
Restrictions: Permits are non-transferable and non-refundable, and are tied to your specific passport information.
February closure: The Inca Trail is closed for the entire month of February every year for conservation and maintenance work, with no permits issued during this time.

EXCELLENT Based on 29844 reviews Posted on arian sVerified Machupichu hike This four days and three nights trail was memorable. Our Guides Joyce and Velentin were very friendly and helpful. Chef made yummy food for breakfast, lunch and dinner and made our trip memorable.Posted on Scott AVerified Wonderful trip It was a great trip, Carlos Arque the guide was extremely knowledgeable and Maximo the cook does not hold back on the courses. You get a lot of food.Posted on Ravi SVerified Rubén Andrade Guide review Our tour guide, Rubén Andrade, provided an exceptional and well-organized experience. He was punctual, highly knowledgeable, and offered detailed explanations of the Inca Empire, including the Sun Temple, Water Temple, architectural innovations, and the engineering achievements of various Inca rulers. His insights into Machu Picchu its history, significance, and the ingenuity behind its construction made the visit especially memorable. In addition to the archaeological sites, we visited the Salt Mines, alpaca clothing workshops, local restaurants, and several beautiful churches in Cusco. Rubén also assisted us with coordinating hotel bookings, ensuring our stay was comfortable and seamless. Throughout the trip, he remained on schedule and managed each activity efficiently, completing all planned tasks with professionalism and care.Posted on Amanda @SoulScubaVerified A mystical and rewarding experience. Do the 5 day option for more relaxing trek. This was an experience of a lifetime! Hiking through the Andes and the magical high altitude jungle, learning about the Incan culture, and communing with "Pachamama" (Mother Earth) was magical beyond desciption. I'll be honest, the hike was a bit brutal for me, hours of climbing and descending steep stairs, one day 10 full hours of arduous trekking, much of it in the rain. Challenging, yet rewarding...make sure your body is ready for it! I have done other big treks in years past, such as Everest base camp, but I'll admit that time got away with me and I didn't train in advance for this. I'm 46 and a few times I doubted myself, but I made it, and it was worth it. The majority of my group were people in their 20's who seemed focused on seeing how fast they could reach the destination, so I was always in the back of the pack, but I didnt mind and never felt left behind. There was always a guide behind me. I'm the kind of hiker who likes to stop and look at plants and rocks, smell flowers, and meditate in nature. I found out after that there is a 5 day option and if I were to do this again I would take that option so as to not feel so pressured to get from point A to B. I want to say that our guides Edward and Celio were first class as were the amazing supermen porters who carried our tents and other items. And the food was more than expected. I am a vegetarian and they always had special options and more delicious food than I could eat. Be prepared to tip the staff well because they deserve it! Finally, Macchu Picchu in itself is a phenomenal sight to see, but nothing can beat the experience of arriving early morning through the jungle, after a long, rewarding hike and seeing it in the mist above the mountains. Totally mystical experience. DO IT!!!Posted on Rhys KVerified Perfect multi day Incan experience One of our favorite trips we've ever taken! The views were stunning and the crew was incredible. We had Miguel as our chef and he worked miracles with only a tiny gas stove in the middle of the mountains from pizza, to mango ceviche, and an entire cake. Samuel was the porter team leader and kept the whole porter team organized and on time. The porters were inspiring to watch as the set up and tore down the entire camp, filled their bags with 60lbs of gear, and still beat us to the next campsite with enough time to set up before we arrived. Jhymy was our tour guide and kept us on pace and on time. He allowed us to do some parts solo at our own pace giving us some personal time and kept us together for the trickier parts of the hike. He was very knowledable on all the ruins we saw and I enjoyed learning many new things about Incan culture. He was very respectful, his English was easily understood, and he kept the whole team motivated and lighthearted. Raul was the assistant guide, training to become a full time guide. His English was also easily understood, and he was also very respectful and social. I would recommend this trek and these mountaineers to anyone with a sense for adventure!Posted on Jake SVerified Incan trail hike on day one, Machu Picchu the next day Staff was wonderful. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS.
What is the best Month to hike the Inca Trail to Matchu Picchu?
The Inca Trail is open from March to January (closed every February for maintenance). The best months are considered to be May through September, when the weather is dry, skies are clearer, and conditions are ideal for trekking. These months also coincide with Peru’s high season, so permits sell out quickly – booking at least 6 months in advance is strongly recommended.
If you prefer fewer crowds with still-good weather, April and October are also excellent choices.
Does the inca trail go to Machu Picchu?
Yes! The Inca Trail is the only trek that takes you directly into Machu Picchu through the Sun Gate (Inti Punku), just as the Incas once entered the citadel. Most other treks end with a train or bus ride to the site, but the Inca Trail gives you the unique experience of hiking into Machu Picchu itself.
Do you offer group and private tours?
Yes. We offer both small group treks and private tours. Group treks are perfect if you’d like to share the adventure with other travellers and keep costs lower. Private tours are ideal if you prefer a more personalised experience, choosing your own dates, pace, and level of comfort. Both options include our full team of professional guides, porters, and chefs to ensure your trek is safe and unforgettable.
Do I need a permit for the Inca Trail?
Yes. Every trekker on the Inca Trail must have an official government-issued permit. These permits are limited to 500 per day (including guides and porters) and often sell out months in advance – especially for high season (May–September). Only licensed tour operators like Alpaca Expeditions can secure these permits on your behalf, so booking early is essential to guarantee your spot.
Do you offer additional excursions before or after the trek?
Yes. Many travellers choose to extend their trip, and we can arrange a wide variety of excursions before or after your trek. Popular add-ons include visiting the Sacred Valley, Rainbow Mountain, Humantay Lake, or exploring Cusco’s rich history and culture. Our team can help customise an itinerary so you make the most of your time in Peru.
What’s the weather like on the trek?
The Inca Trail passes through several microclimates, so you’ll experience a mix of conditions. Days are usually mild and sunny (15–20°C / 59–68°F), perfect for hiking, while nights at higher camps can be cold, dropping close to 0°C / 32°F.
- Dry season (May–September): Clear skies, less rain, but colder nights.
- Wet season (November–March): Warmer temperatures, more rain, lush green landscapes.
- Shoulder months (April & October): A good balance of fewer crowds and decent weather.
Because conditions change quickly, it’s best to pack in layers and always bring good rain protection.
What kind of food can I expect on the hike?
You’ll be pleasantly surprised by the quality and variety of meals on the Inca Trail. Our chefs prepare fresh, hearty, and delicious dishes using local ingredients to keep you energised throughout the trek. Expect a mix of Peruvian and international cuisine – soups, rice, pasta, fresh vegetables, chicken, beef, and even vegetarian or vegan options on request.
Each day includes:
- Hot breakfasts to start your trek strong
- Nutritious lunches with plenty of variety
- Three-course dinners served in a dining tent
- Snacks & tea time with hot drinks and treats
We happily cater to vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, and other dietary needs with advance notice.
